Soulja Boy, Obey.

He’s at it again. After releasing a near double-digit total of mixtapes in 2011, Soulja Boy is back with more free music in early 2012, in the form of his latest mixtape, Obey, which follows up January’s 50/13. Though, at 12 tracks, this offering comes in a more digestible dosage than the majority of his other tapes, which often log around 20 songs, Obey finds SB unable to break out of his recent rut of producing frequent, but disposable music.
The mixtape kicks off on a high note, with the hyper “Hop Out,” a collaboration with Taylor Gangers Chevy Woods and Juicy J. As Chevy crafts a catchy hook and Juicy J bring his patented rowdiness to the track, Soulja holds his own with the project’s first verse—an unimpressive though thematically fitting frenzy of words. As the tape progresses, though, that formula becomes unsustainable. SB’s flows continue to sound forced, and he comes off perplexingly uncomfortable on record for someone who has put out some 100 songs in the last year.
Both in his cadence and content, Soulja Boy seems to be freestyling his way through the bulk ofObey. Whether or not this was indeed the case is unclear. What’s a bit easier to determine is that lines like “Higher than a fuck, higher than a duck,” on the sonically settling change of pace “Focused,” are not only elementary in composition, but also peculiar (sure, ducks can fly, but they’re certainly not known for their tendencies to spend time off the ground). Things pick up a bit during the tracks where the SODMG honcho brings along guests, as the Game feature “Too Faded,” and Cheif Keef’s two spots on “Say She Luv Me” and “3hunna” bring some moments of salvage to the tape.
By now, no one should be clicking play on a Soulja Boy song with hopes of having to hit the rewind button to better grasp the intricacies of what he’s saying. The Interscope signee has built his career on entertaining, dance-ready rhymes and rhythms that can kick a Saturday night into gear. The production here is reliable enough that the tape could still find its place in the background of that sort of setting, but Soulja Boy’s uninspired approach on Obey prevents it from being much else. On “Focused,” he praises his many followers, at one point saying “my fans is flames.” Indeed, it’s their passionate following that allows the young rapper to continue to put out his music, and you can be sure he’ll do just that.

Kat Stacks Comes Clean, Admits Lying About Soulja Boy Cocaine Accusations.

Kat Stacks, known for her reputation as a hip-hop groupie, has been behind bars in an immigration jail since 2010. Yet, that hasn’t stopped her Twitter account from having an active status and being updated. Over the weekend, Kat Stacks took to Twitter to come clean about lying on rapper Soulja Boy and the allegations of him using cocaine.
She’s been off the scene for quite some time due to her incarceration, but hip-hop fans may recall back in 2010 when she released a video that allegedly showed Soulja Boy’s hotel room filled with lines of cocaine on his dresser. That video alone sparked a lot of controversy, but now Kat Stacks decided to come clean and admit that she put the entire video together as a set up.
On her Twitter, she admits that she takes full responsibility for setting Soulja Boy up, but she eludes to the fact she didn’t act alone. She claims that others were involved in helping her staging the shower scene, and that the lines of cocaine were actually crushed up Advil pills.
Nobody is quite sure what made her decide to officially come clear, but apparently it was something she just had to get off her chest. No official response from Soulja Boy yet regarding her confession.

Kat Stacks: I Lied On Soulja Boy.

Presumably shared by way of a texts from a prepaid cell phone that were subsequently posted by one of her friends, Kat Stacks is speaking from behind the cell to confirm what many had long said about her: She’s a liar. That is, specifically in the case of Soulja Boy, whom she tried to paint as a coke head. Yes, Kat Stacks tweeted shots of what looked like coke, no cola in the hotel bathroom where they got together to do the adult.

Now, Kat says it was all a farce intended to get attention.
She tweeted:
World I have something to tell yall, some might hate me for it but im gonna clean some dirty laundry
Those weren’t lines of cocaine in the @souljaboy video, it was crushed up Advil pills
Me & some n*ggas staged the shower scene after @souljaboy left
Even though I was influenced by others around me & didn’t do it alone, I take full responsibility
She also added:
The truth shall set you free
Only God can judge me
I already made my peace with God & the person I hurt as long as im good with them I don’t care what anybody else thinks & even so, God doesn’t judge us he loves us. He just makes us reflect on our mistakes & guide us to do better
Your past doesn’t make who you are today, you have the choice to build a brighter future & achieve greatness.

FREE MUSIC: SOULJA BOY MIXTAPE, AN ANGRY J. COLE & MORE.

Soulja Boy: Obey

Some rappers are either loved or detested, and then there’s Soulja Boy, who elicits responses along the lines of “he’s alright” or “he f***ing sucks.” Chances are good even his defenders won’t want to spend the ear-effort on his entire new mixtape, available here, so just check out the highlight track “Hop Out” below, featuring Chevy Woods and Juicy J.

All Eyez on Us.

The Hiphop Archive looks less like a research space and more like a well-kept living room. The walls are lined with numerous display cases, one for VHS tapes, one for books, and one for action figures. Sleeves of old vinyl hip-hop records run along the baseboards.
A big couch and a couple of chairs face a large flat-screen television. A few of the archive’s student research assistants lounge around, writing papers on their laptops or listening to hip-hop. Above the television, on a shelf, sits a collection of iconic hip-hop paraphernalia: a turntable, multicolored cans of spray paint, a boom box. A fully functional DJ station resides in one corner.
The space is, in short, hip. It feels perfectly suited for the work its researchers are doing: It is not so buttoned up as to be stifling, nor is it relaxed enough to imply that what goes on here is anything less than serious scholarship.
It may seem incongruous to devote an academic research center to a popular art form such as hip-hop, but the location of the Hiphop Archive itself is even more so: Harvard University. The Hiphop Archive ultimately raises question about the art form itself. What lies beneath the surface of this popular entertainment to merit such focus? Why does the Hiphop Archive belong within the ivy-covered walls of Harvard?

Hip-Hop Rumors: The Cast of “Love and Hip Hop Atlanta” Revealed!

We’ve been hearing about a “Love and Hip Hop Atlanta” spinoff show for a while now, and the official cast list has been leaked.
The Hotlanta cast will consist of Diamond, formally of Crime Mob, Diamond’s ex-boyfriend, Scrappy, and Scrappy’s mother, Mama D., Atlanta rapper, Rasheeda and her husband/manager, Kirk Frost, and producer, Stevie J.
Lil’ Scrappy and Diamond used to date and had a very messy break up! Diamond ran into the arms of Soulja Boy, and Scrappy’s mama, Mama D did not like that one bit. She went to the local radio station and put Diamond on blast! Here’s a little of what she said:
“Okay, the b*tch done got breast implants and booty shots, the b*tch ain’t real first of all. Secondly, Soulja boy is gonna come behind him anyway. So at the end of the day Scrappy is chilling, he’s fine, he’s the Prince of the South and he got it good. He’s living good and he ain’t thinking about that bitch…dirty low down b*tch.”
If you thought the relationship between Chrissy Lampkin and Nancy Jones was volatile, it’s a drop in the bucket compared to Diamond and Mama D. Expect lots of cracked-out moments with her!
Stevie J used to date Eve back in the day and allegedly leaked a sex tape of the two of them a few years back. He pretty much fell off the face of the earth after that. It will be interesting to see what he is up to now.
Rasheeda is a local Atlanta singer/ rapper. I hear she’s very sassy and about her business.
Will you be watching the new “Love and Hip Hop Atlanta” spinoff show?

Soulja Boy Professes Love For Kim Kardashian In New Song

Soulja Boy has professed his love for Kim Kardashian in a new song dedicated to the reality star.
The rapper must have too much time on his hands because he recorded the monotonoussong which contains the lyrics: "Damn, she's fine, she's on my mind/ She's so beautiful from the behind."
Adding a bit of flavour to the track, Soulja intermittently repeats the word "swag" throughout.

Fortunately for Soulja, Kim seemed to like the sentiment, writing on Twitter: "Wow! Oh souljaboy… I love it ;-) ! #Swag."
Will Kim fall for Soulja's charm? Do we have a new couple to watch out for?

Tuesday Track: “Moon & Stars” (Clams Casino Remix) by Big K.R.I.T.

Spring break is next week, which means sun-tanning, having your own spacious bedroom and eating home-cooked meals. But whether you’re laying out in the sun or watching TV in your bed, you should be listening to Clams Casino’s remix of Big K.R.I.T’s, “Moon & Stars.”

It’s rare to hear a substantial lyricist rap over synthetic, ambient sounds, but producer Clams Casino has been changing the underground rap game lately — which has transitioned from thick, abrasive beats to more mellow undertones. Although the drums are still domineering in “Moon & Stars,” the diversity of genres makes this song extremely unique.

Big K.R.I.T. is a Southern rapper who has come a long way in the underground rap scene. Last year was arguably his breakthrough year, where he performed with Curren$y, Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller on nation-wide tours. In fact, Big K.R.I.T. released latest, much-anticipated album yesterday, “4Eva N A Day,” which already has music magazines raving.

Although the original version of “Moon & Stars” was great, Clams Casino gives the song an entirely new feel. His sound has been highly acclaimed in the past year and Clams Casino has produced a handful of ASAP Rocky’s tracks, as well as tracks for Main Attrakionz, Lil B and Soulja Boy. His beat tape, which is a compilation of his tracks without any lyrics, is arguably more enjoyable to listen to than the songs he originally produced the tracks for.

“Moon & Stars” encapsulates a new subsection of the history of hip-hop. Here’s a link to Big K.R.I.T.’s newest release, 4eva N A Day. And don’t forget to check out Clams Casino’s beat tape. And definitely don’t forget NYU Local while you’re working on that tan. You’re welcome.
