Soulja Boy weighs in on the music industry, giving his opinion of how he believes artists will need to evolve in order to survive in the new generation of music.
SODMG head honcho Soulja Boy had a disappointing year in 2011 as far as album sales are concerned. The young rapper had heavily promoted his ‘The DeAndre Way’ album to his nearly 3 million Twitter followers alongside his millions of Facebook fans.
It turns out your Twitter popularity does not coincide with your album sales, as ‘The DeAndre Way’ went on to sell a painstakingly low 13,000 copies in its first week on retail shelves and digital downloads. The project did feature one breakthrough single in ‘Pretty Boy Swag,’ which managed to go platinum. The album has since moved right under 100,000 copies, which isn’t too bad considering the opening week.
Soulja Boy recently sat down with the Wall Street Journal to discuss where he thinks the future lies in the music scene with the rapid progression of technology.
“I think over the next five to ten years, artists are gonna resort to touring, of course. But I also think social media is gonna kick in to the next level. With the iPhone, the iPad and everything that’s coming out, there’s gonna be a new invention for the way people consume music,” Soulja Boy stated.
To many fans, Soulja Boy’s best days are behind him, and the rapper still holds the 14th slot for highest selling digital single of all time with his breakthrough single ‘Crank Dat.’ Soulja Boy is set to release his brand new ‘Promise’ album in the ensuing months.
